Sub-Zero publishes its own order of checks, and the first three cost nothing: allow a full 24 hours after switching on, verify the ice maker is actually enabled, and confirm the freezer is at or below 5 F. A machine in a freezer running at 8 F will underproduce whatever condition it is in.

Sub-Zero water supply, filter and fill tube
Reseat the water filter, twist-in or push-in, and check for an expired inline filter, which sits outside the cabinet and is the one people forget. Confirm the supply valve is on. Small or hollow cubes are Sub-Zero’s published signature of low water pressure rather than a failed machine.
Sub-Zero shut-off arm and rudder arm
The shut-off arm has to be down or the machine will sit idle, correctly. The white plastic rudder arm must be properly attached. Both are on Sub-Zero’s own inspection list and both are routinely knocked out of place while unloading a freezer.

The undercounter machines are 14-3/4 inches wide, 23 deep and 33-5/8 high, into a 15-1/4 inch opening with a 3-1/2 inch finished return all round. A custom panel on one is limited to 15 lb, far less than a refrigerator door allows and easy to exceed with solid timber in a fitted Manhattan kitchen.
